A woman in Andhra Pradesh reportedly left her newborn baby in a drain and later checked herself into a hospital. Locals rescued the infant girl, who was covered in dirt.
While the baby is under observation at a local hospital, authorities are yet to decide on the child’s custody.
A medical officer at the hospital explained a bleeding woman arrived at the hospital at dawn and claimed her newborn baby had died.
“We were on a morning walk when we heard the baby's cries. When we looked for the source of the cries, we found the baby in the drain and took her out,” a local said, as per NDTV.
A police official from Palamner told the outlet that the unidentified woman came from Karnataka. “The baby has been handed over to the care of the ICDS officers, and the child welfare committee will take a decision,” the officer said.
