Brahmapuram garbage fire: NGT slaps Rs 100 crore fine on Kochi corporation

National Green Tribunal has imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore on the Kochi Municipal Corporation for their 'utter failure' to manage waste effectively at the Brahmapuram waste dumping yard, which led to a major fire outbreak on March 2.

Coming down heavily on Kerala authorities, the Bench blamed the State for the environmental emergency caused due to fire and directed the civic body to deposit the money with the Chief Secretary within a month for necessary remediation measures.

The NGT was hearing a matter in which it had initiated suo-motu (on its own) proceedings on the basis of a media report.
