A Congress MLA has sparked a controversy after he commented on the colour of the new Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya during a discussion on the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand Assembly.

Congress MLA from Jaspur, Adesh Singh Chauhan, according to reports, said that scriptures say that Ram was dusky but the BJP has him black. He was referring to the black stone used to carve out the new Ram Lall idol for the temple in Ayodhya.

"According to the Hindu scriptures, Ram was 'sanwala' (dusky), but you people made the Ram Lalla idol installed in the temple in Ayodhya black," news agency PTI reported Chauhan as saying.

The comment spared a huge uproar in the Uttarakhand Assembly with BJP MLAs raising 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Premchand Aggarwal rose from his seat and asked the Congress MLA to speak only on the UCC bill. The minister accused Chauhan of insulting Ram and added that Congress only does appeasement and votebank politics.

The House was soon brought to order by Speaker Ritu Khanduri who asked the minister to take his seat and the Congress MLA to not deviate from the topic of discussion.
