India reported over 2.82 lakh new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday taking India's total tally of cases to nearly 3.8 crore, which includes 8,961 cases of the Omicron variant, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
The death toll climbed to over 4.87 lakh with 441 fresh fatalities while the active cases increased to over 18.3 lakh, the highest in 232 days.

The active cases comprise 4.83 percent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.88 percent, the ministry said.
The daily positivity rate was recorded at 15.13 percent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 15.53 percent.
Experts said it is not possible to undertake genome sequencing of each and every sample but stressed that the current wave is largely being driven by the Omicron variant.
Meanwhile, the cumulative total of the vaccine doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide Covid-19 vaccination drive has exceeded 158.88 crores.
