The disruption at an important session of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) deteriorated into violence on 6 January 2023.

Some councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party engaged in physical altercations ahead of the elections to the posts of Delhi Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

One member was even seen trying to throw a chair at the opposite side. Subsequently, the session was adjourned for the day without voting for the Mayoral election taking place. The next date will be announced later.

The disruption began with AAP objecting to a decision by the interim presiding officer to administer oaths to aldermen who have been nominated by the Lieutenant Governor.
