Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said that when Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, he bowed down while shaking hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"When Modiji shook your hands and I went to shake your hands, I noticed something. When I shook your hand you stood straight and shook my hand. And when Modiji shook your hand, you bowed down and shook his hands, " Rahul Gandhi said.

"Speaker is last word and custodian, shouldn't bow to anyone in House," he added.

To which Birla responded, "Modi is the leader of the house. My culture teaches me that in my personal capacity and in my capacity as the chair of the Lok Sabha, one must bow down to elders while greeting. And those who are equal to me should be treated equally.
