Dibrugarh university ragging row: Assam CM condemns act; 5 students arrested

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed students to not indulge in ragging after a student of Dibrugarh University tried to kill himself by jumping off the hostel building. 

In a tweet, Sarma said the victim is being provided medical treatment and officials are looking into the matter. 

Meanwhile, Assam Police, as per an NDTV report have arrested five people in connection with the alleged ragging of juniors at the university.

The incident came to light after a commerce student named Anand Sharma reportedly jumped off the second floor of the hostel in an attempt to save himself from the alleged assault by seniors.

The accused involve one former and four current students of the university, and police lodged a case against them following complaint by the victim student's family.

Case has been registered under sections relating to criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder, restraining a person.

University authorities reportedly have also ordered an investigation into the matter.
