G20 in Kashmir: heightened security in Srinagar; strict checking at venue

Heavy security deployment was seen in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir on Day 1 of the high-profile G20 international event.

Strict checking was witnessed at the venue of the event, the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre on May 22, 2023. Random searching of vehicles was also being carried out. Soldiers in armoured vehicles were seen stationed on roadsides.

The Union Territory is hosting a meeting of the G20 tourism working group till May 24.

The G20 Tourism Working Group meeting here has the highest delegate participation and will be the most significant event held in Jammu and Kashmir, G20 Chief Coordinator Harshvardhan Shringla said on May 21.

"We have the highest representation of foreign delegates in this working group meeting than the earlier two meetings. All I can say is we are very very happy with the turnout. We have the making of a unique meeting," Shringla told reporters.

Shringla was responding to a question about some member countries not registering for the working group meeting.
