Providing interim relief to protestors in Uttarakhand's Haldwani, the Supreme Court on 5 January 2023 paused their eviction from land claimed by the Railways.

The Supreme Court paused an Uttarakhand High Court order which had cleared the way for their eviction. The top court said that thousands of people cannot be uprooted overnight.

The disputed 2 km area reportedly has houses, 4 government schools, 11 private schools, a bank, 2 water tanks, 10 mosques, 4 temples, and many shops.
