Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday gave a statement in Rajya Sabha on the accidental firing of a missile that landed inside Pakistan on March 9.

Singh said that the exact cause of the incident can be known only through a probe. "I would also like to say that in the context of this incident, standard operating procedures of operations, maintenance and inspections are also being reviewed," the defence minister added.

Rajnath Singh also assured the House that India's missile system is "highly safe and secure", adding that if any shortcoming is found, it'll immediately be rectified.

On March 9, an Indian missile was accidentally fired and it landed in Pakistan. The Defence Ministry had on March 11 called the incident "deeply regrettable". It added that incident was caused by a technical malfunction in the course of its routine maintenance.

Pakistan had summoned India's Charge d'Affaires at in Islamabad and conveyed its strong protest over the "unprovoked" violation of its airspace by the supersonic "projectile" of Indian origin.
