Over 58,000 new Covid cases in a day, sharp rise of 55%, Omicron tally tops 2100

India has recorded a steep spike in Covid-19 cases with over 58,000 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, govt data showed on Wednesday morning. This is a sharp jump of 55% from over 37,000 cases recorded on Tuesday.

The number of deaths due to Covid also jumped 5 folds with 534 fatalities reported on Wednesday. India had logged 124 Covid deaths on Tuesday.

The number of active Covid case has also shot past the 2 lakh mark. The country has reported a positivity rate of over 4%.

Meanwhile, the number of Omicron cases in India has crossed 2100. The cases of the more infectious Covid-19 variant have been reported in 23 states so far, according to the Union Health Ministry.

Maharashtra has reported the highest 653 cases so far while Delhi has reported 464 patients.
