A low-intensity explosion was reported at Bavode near Chakkarakkal in Kerala's Kannur in the politically volatile district early on Monday.

Explosive materials in ice-cream ball-shaped containers exploded in the area where tension has been simmering between the activists of the BJP and the CPI (M) for some days over some local issues, PTI reported citing police sources.

The news agency added police personnel were present in the nearby area when the blast occurred.

News agency ANI said, a bomb squad accompanied by a dog squad was rushed to the spot to carry out searches, however, it could not be ascertained as to who threw the bomb.

Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident has been launched by the police.
