The passing away of Lata Mangeshkar elicited grief and condolences from across the border as well.

Pakistani news channels were seen airing clips of Mangeshkar singing, and listing her numerous achievements and accolades. Pakistan's minister for information and broadcasting Fawad Hussain tweeted a tribute for the Bollywood icon. Hussain called her a "melodious queen who ruled the world of music for decades". He added that her voice will "keep ruling the hearts of people".

Interestingly, Lata was a vocal admirer of Pakistani ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan. She had once reportedly said that god sings through Hassan's throat.

The two had also collaborated on a song in 2009-10, albeit remotely. For the duet 'Tera Milana' from the album 'Sarhadein', Mehdi Hassan reportedly recorded his parts in Pakistan, while Lata did the same in India.

The two music legends had great respect for each other, even amid periods of tension between their home countries.

When Mehdi Hassan passed away in 2012, Lata paid a glowing tribute to him.
She reportedly said that music brings everyone together, and musicians are always close to one another.
