After a wait of almost two years, journalist Siddique Kappan was granted bail by the Supreme Court on 9 September 2022.
The Kerala-based journalist was arrested in October 2020 while travelling to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh to report on the story of a Dalit woman's gangrape and death. Kappan was charged under the anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
The Supreme Court ordered Kappan to stay in Delhi for 6 weeks after release from a UP prison. He has also been asked to submit his passport, and report to a police station every week.
Opposing Kappan's bail, the Uttar Pradesh government had argued that he has links with the Popular Front of India (PFI), and involved in a conspiracy to "incite religious discord and spread terror". The journalist had denied the allegations.
