A photograph from the recent communal clashes in Rajasthan has gone viral. It shows a policeman running with a child in his hands, while a building goes up in flames in the background.
It was reportedly captured during violence in Karauli on April 2, when alleged stone-pelting at a bike rally during a Hindu festival reportedly led to clashes.
The constable was identified as Netresh Sharma. His brave feat elicited glowing praise on social media. Even the Chief Minister of Rajasthan spoke to the constable on the phone, and informed him about his promotion.
CM Ashok Gehlot told Sharma, "Your feat was magnificent. I felt very good after reading about this. I called the DGP and commissioner, and told them to promote such a constable. I have ordered that you be made Head Constable. I congratulate you and give my best wishes."
When the cop said that he was just doing his duty, Gehlot said, " Many people are supposed to do their duty. But risking your own life to do this is creditable. My best wishes. If you visit Jaipur, then we'll meet."
On April 2, alleged stone-pelting at a bike rally passing through a Muslim-dominated area led to vandalism, violence, and arson in which around 30 people were reportedly injured.
