The national capital seems set to see a heated fight on 6 January 2023 for the post of Delhi Mayor as both the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party have thrown their hats in the ring.

The AAP, which won the recent municipal corporation (MCD) elections, has fielded Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Muhammad Iqbal for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor respectively. Ashu Thakur and Jalaj Kumar are back-up candidates.

They are being challenged by BJP's Rekha Gupta and Kamal Bagri.

The election was preceded by a political fight over the appointment of BJP councillor Satya Sharma, instead of AAP's Mukesh Goyal, as presiding officer for the election by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
