In a major development in the Gyanvapi Masjid case, a team from the Archaeological Survey of India began a scientific survey at the mosque on the morning of July 24.
Police personnel were seen entering the premises as the court-mandated survey began.
Earlier, the Varanasi district court had ordered an ASI study to see if the mosque was built over a pre-existing Hindu temple.
A group of women have sought permission to pray regularly at the Shringar Gauri temple in the mosque premises.
