India's 76th Independence Day turned bloody in Karnataka's Shivamogga as clashes broke out reportedly over a tussle to put up posters at the Ameer Ahmad Circle.
A group had installed a banner featuring Vinayak Savarkar, when another group tried to remove it and replace it with a poster featuring Tipu Sultan. A person was stabbed in the ensuing clashes, as per reports.
Subsequently, police arrived and dispersed the mob using batons. The poster was reportedly confiscated, and the national flag was installed at the spot. Orders under CrPC Section 144 prohibiting large gatherings were imposed in the area to maintain peace.

Both Savarkar and Tipu Sultan have become politically controversial figures, with the BJP calling Savarkar a great freedom fighter, and Tipu Sultan a bigoted despot. The labels have been contested by Opposition parties like the Congress.
