As women across the country celebrated Karwachauth, female inmates in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow and Gorakhpur jails also observed the festival after Uttar Pradesh minister for jails, Dharamveer Prajapati, issued a direction in this regard.
According to jail officials, 10 newly married inmates celebrated their Karwachauth in the prison.
The jail authorities also allowed the family members of the women inmates to send them puja material and edibles.
As a part of the ritual married women were allowed to sit in a circle outside the barracks for the puja. Husbands of about half-a-dozen women inmates who are also lodged in the jail were allowed to meet their spouses.
Meanwhile, in Gorakhpur, about 12 women inmates observed the fast. Interestingly, two women prisoners who are implicated in the murder of their husbands also fasted.
