Kerala shuts 40 hotels, imposes fine on 62, warns 28 after nurse's death due to suspected food poisoning

In a major crackdown after the death of a nurse due to suspected food poisoning, Kerala authorities shut down 40 hotels on 3 January 2023. The Kerala food safety department also levied a fine on 62 hotels, while 28 establishments were given a warning after raids across the state.

On 29 December 2022, 33-year-old nurse Reshmi Raj had ordered food from Hotel Park in Kottayam. She was later hospitalised, and died on 2 January 2023.

At least 20 other people who ate at the hotel also fell sick, according to officials.
