In a first for Nagaland, the north-eastern state has elected its first woman lawmaker.

Hekani Jakhalu of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party won the Dimapur III seat by defeating Lok Janshakti Party leader Azheto Zhimomi by 1,536 votes.

Her party is in alliance with the BJP.

Four women were among the 183 candidates who contested this year's elections for the Nagaland Assembly.

No woman was elected as lawmaker in Nagaland, though the state has witnessed 14 Assembly elections since its formation.
