Educationist, reformer, and innovator Sonam Wangchuk appealed to the Narendra Modi government to help protect Ladakh and its natural features which are at risk from industrialisation.
Wangchuk, who inspired one of the characters in the movie '3 Idiots', plans to sit on a 5-day fast from 26 January at Khardung La pass at an altitude of 18,000 ft with temperatures as low as (-)40 degrees Celsius.
He told news agency ANI on 22 January 2023 that unchecked rise of industries, tourism, and commerce will "finish" Ladakh.
He explained that two-thirds of the glaciers in the region are in danger, putting large parts of India at risk of water scarcity. He appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect Ladakh and other Himalayan regions from industrial exploitation.
