Mumbai experienced its coldest December morning in nine years on Monday, with temperatures dropping to 13.7 degrees Celsius at the Santacruz observatory, 5.1 degrees below the usual norm. The last time temperatures were this low was on December 24, 2015, when the mercury dipped to 11.4 degrees Celsius.
Meteorologists anticipate that the cold spell will continue for the next few days before temperatures gradually rise. This sharp temperature drop comes just days after Mumbai recorded its hottest December day in 13 years, with a high of 37.3 degrees Celsius on December 4.
The Colaba observatory reported a minimum temperature of 19.2 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures remained moderate. Santacruz recorded a maximum of 32.2 degrees Celsius, which is 0.9 degrees below the normal, and Colaba reached 30.3 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees below the typical readings.
In other news, Mumbai’s air quality showed signs of improvement. The Central Pollution Control Board’s 4pm bulletin reported an air quality index of 112 across 20 of the 30 monitoring stations, with PM10 (particulate matter of 10 micrometers or less) identified as the main pollutant.
