The Indian National Congress finally elected Veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge as its new President.
With Kharge, the grand old party got its 1st non-Gandhi chief in over two decades. Mallikarjun Kharge got 7,897 votes while 1072 leaders voted in favour of Tharoor.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge were in direct contest, for which voting took place on October 17th.
Accepting defeat, Tharoor extended his good wishes to Kharge. Tharoor even thanked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for doing their own bit to support free and neutral Cong prez elections.
Other party leaders including Chidambaram congratulated Kharge for becoming Cong chief. Leaders of the grand old party voted in historic elections in party offices and booth set up in various states across the country.
