The lure of online cricket betting took a horrific turn after a Karnataka woman died by suicide due after her husband lost over ₹1.5 crore in IPL.
Darshan Babu, an engineer, reportedly often used to borrow money after losing a bet or to place one in IPL when he was short of funds. Tired of the constant harassment by creditors, his His 23-year-old wife Ranjitha reportedly died by suicide.
She was found hanging at her home in Chitradurga on March 18.
Ranjitha married Darshan in 2020. The duo has a two-year-old son. Ranjitha’s father, Venkatesh, claimed that she found out the truth about Darshan's involvement in betting in 2021.
During the investigation, police found a suicide note by Ranjitha in which she described the harassment.
In his complaint her father said that Ranjitha was extremely distressed due to the constant harassment by moneylenders and this led to her suicide.
He has also named 13 men who had allegedly lent the money to Darshan.
"He Darshan was not willing to get into betting, but the suspects forced him saying it was an easy way to get rich. They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security," Venkatesh said.
