A 37-year-old woman from Manipur has filed a complaint saying she raped by a mob while she was trying to flee her home as the ethnic violence broke out in state on May 3.

The woman has said in her FIR says that she was fleeing her home in Churachandpur district on May 3 with her children, her sister-in-law and her niece when she was raped by a group of five to six people.

She said that she had her niece on her back and was holding her children as they tried to escape mob frenzy. She added that after running for some distance, she stumbled and fell. Unable to get up, she asked her sister-in-law to run with the children and when she finally managed to get up, the woman was surround by 5-6 men. The woman said they first verbally abused her and then raped her.

The woman said she has been living in a relief camp since then and her health, physical and mental, took a major hit after the incident.

She also said that the trauma and fear of social stigma had prevented her from registering a complaint.
