Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti commented on Friday that the devastation caused by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles should lead to a broader reflection on the destruction in Gaza.
Mufti expressed her shock at the LA fires and noted that they serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of environmental negligence. However, she also pointed out that the tragedy in Gaza is not a natural disaster, but the result of actions by "a rogue Israel government," with many in LA, including celebrities, appearing indifferent or complicit.
"Hopefully, the people witnessing the destruction in LA will gain a deeper understanding of the profound impact that comes when homes and lives are torn apart," Mufti, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, said in her post on X.
Massive wildfires that engulfed whole neighborhoods and displaced thousands in Los Angeles have killed at least 10 people, authorities said, as California's National Guard soldiers readied to hit the streets to help quell disorder.
Meanwhile, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reported on Thursday that 70 people had died in the past 24 hours, pushing the total death toll in the region to 46,006.
In a statement, the ministry added that more than 109,378 individuals had been injured since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began over 15 months ago, following the Palestinian group's attack on October 7, 2023.
