Mumbai records over 20,000 Covid-19 cases: is a lockdown inevitable now?

Commercial capital Mumbai recorded the highest single-day record of 20,181 new Covid cases and four death on Thursday.

While the active cases stand at 79,260, Mumbai’s positivity rate was recorded to be 29.9 percent on Thursday. As per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, a total of 67,000 test samples were collected on Thursday.

Taking note of the massive spike since the last two weeks, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar had earlier declared that the maximum city is likely to go into a lockdown if and when the daily Covid cases breach the 20,000-mark.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded a total of 36,265 Covid-19 cases and 13 deaths on Thursday. While 8,907 people were discharged from the hospitals. The state reported 79 new Omicron cases on Thursday taking the total tally to 876 cases.
