After an all-party meeting, Nitish Kumar-led government on Wednesday announced that Bihar would conduct its own caste census after the Centre made it clear that it cannot go ahead with a nationwide exercise.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Nitish Kumar said that the exercise would be called Jaati Aadharit Ganana. The decision to go ahead with this was unanimously taken by all the political parties present at the meeting, including the BJP.

The Janata Dal United leader said that the state government would ensure the entire exercise is completed within a particular time.

The chief minister added that a formal proposal to conduct a caste-based census in the state will soon be brought before the state cabinet for approval, following which the process will begin.
