Prime Minister Narendra Modi poked fun at the United Kingdom after India overtook UK to become the world's fifth-largest economy.
PM Modi said that this rise in rank was special as the British had ruled India for 250 years. He added that the rise in India's economic ranking has come soon after the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign for 15 August 2022 when India completed 75 years of freedom.
The Indian economy is now behind only the United States of America, China, Japan, and Germany.
However, India has a long way to go in translating this economic rise to benefits for the entire population. Given India's large population, the country a long way behind UK in terms of GDP per capita. While India's per capita GDP is $2,500, UK's per capita GDP is $47,000.
