'Can India have 5 capitals instead of 1?': Assam CM's suggestion amid Twitter fight with Arvind Kejriwal

India should have 5 national capitals, instead of just one - this idea was mooted by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 29 August 2022. Sarma said that there should be a discussion on each zone of India hosting a national capital in order to end regional disparities.

Engaged in a Twitter war with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Sarma said that having multiple capitals would also mean that some governments, like in Delhi, do not have access to huge wealth and resources, while regions like the Northeast struggle.

The Assam CM also claimed that the "mainstreaming" of the Northeast began in 2014 when Narendra Modi became Prime Minister.

Earlier, Kejriwal and Sarma had clashed over the state of education in Delhi and Assam. Sarma had said that Kejriwal had failed to fulfil his promise of turning Delhi into London or Paris, and so was comparing the national capital to smaller cities in states like Assam.
