A government clerk who failed to recognise Union minister Smriti Irani's voice over the phone is being investigated for allegedly not discharging his duties regarding a pension matter.

On 27 August 2022, Amethi MP Smriti Irani was given a complaint letter by Karunesh, a resident of Poore Pahalwan village. The plaintiff claimed that after his father's death, his mother was entitled to pension, but lekhpal Deepak was not doing verification work. Due to this, the complainant's mother was not getting pension.

Subsequently, minister Irani phoned the lekhpal, but he didn't recognise her, according to news agency PTI. Then, the chief development officer (CDO) of Amethi Ankur Lathar took the phone, and asked the lekhpal to meet him at his office. The lekhpal is being probed for laxity, and not discharging his duties.
