In a politically controversial statement, a Congress parliamentarian said that he is proud of India's Mughal heritage. Congress MP from Barpeta, Assam, Abdul Khaleque said that it was the Mughals who created the perception of 'Hindustan'. He said that he is not a descendant of the Mughals, but is still proud of the dynasty.
Khaleque was then asked about the 1671 Battle of Saraighat, in which Ahoms defeated the Mughals. In response, the MP said that the Mughals didn't attack Assam at "individual level", but as rulers of India. He added that the Ahoms repeatedly defeated the Mughals.
India's Mughal history is a politically sensitive topic, and the BJP describes them as invaders and tyrants.
