A political controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu on the occasion of BR Ambedkar's death anniversary after a group put up posters showing the freedom fighter in saffron robes and with ash on his forehead.

An office-bearer of the Indu Makkal Katchi was detained by police after the posters emerged in Thanjavur on 6 December 2022.

Dalit group Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi opposed the posters, saying that Ambedkar was a critic of Brahminical supremacy and had converted from Hinduism to Buddhism.

6 December marks Ambedkar's death anniversary, and is observed as Mahaparinirvan Divas.
