Lawyer Lekshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri on 7 February 2023 took oath as a judge of the Madras High Court. Coinciding with the swearing-in, the Supreme Court rejected petitions challenging her elevation to the judiciary.

Gowri has been accused of indulging in hate speech against Muslims and Christians. Her critics have also cited her alleged affiliation to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Meanwhile, advocates of the Madras High Court staged a protest under the aegis of All India Lawyers' Union, as per news agency ANI.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also staged a demonstration. The protestors opposed Gowri's induction into the High Court.
