Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Harnath Singh Yadav has demanded that the Places of Worship Act, 1991, be repealed, saying that it violates the principle of equality and freedom of religion. During the Zero Hour in Rajya Sabha on February 5, Yadav said that the act undermines the religious rights of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. The Act prohibits the conversion of any place of worship as they exited on August 15, 1947, with Ayodhya being the sole exception. There have growing demands from certain sections of society to abrogate the law, especially in light of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque dispute.
