As the controversy surrounding the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi is being debated in the country’s court rooms, Hindutva fountainhead, the RSS has waded in the issue saying time has come for “historical facts” to be put in the “right perspective” before society.

Sunil Ambekar, the all-India publicity in-charge of the RSS, said at an event that he believes in letting facts come out in the open and truth always finds a way to come out.

He told a gathering at an event that it is true that India is assimilative but he believes there is a responsibility to create public awakening.

When the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Ram temple in Ayodhya in 2019, responding to a question on whether the RSS would now take up the issue of the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and the Shahi Idgah in Mathura, its chief Mohan Bhagwat said: “Because of a historical backdrop, the Sangh got associated with Ayodhya movement as an organisation and it is an exception.

Both the BJP and the RSS leadership gave strict directives to their units across the country to avoid any triumphalism over the verdict.

Analysts think this this articulation appears to be shifting now with lawsuits filed not only in the context of the Gyanvapi mosque but also the Shahi Idgah in Mathura.
