Sikkim flash flood: Bridge washed away, vehicles submerged in massive destruction

The flash flood in Sikkim following a cloudburst and release of water from the Chungthang dam has caused massive destruction.

The Teesta River basin overflowed, completely washing away a steel bridge known as the Indreni bridge in Gangtok.

As many as 23 army personnel have been reported missing and 41 vehicles submerged in the floodwaters.

Border Road Organisation and National Disaster Response Force teams are conducting rescue operations and many locals have been safely evacuated. Officials have confirmed three deaths so far.

All the affected people of Singtam town have been taken to safe places and residents of Dikchu village have been evacuated to a nearby school.
