Chief Minister of flood-hit Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang has said that the Chungthang Dam got washed away due to poor construction quality.
Speaking to NDTV, Tamang blamed the "substandard" construction by the erstwhile Sikkim Democratic Front government led by ex-Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling for the tragedy. He added that the disaster in the state's lower belt is because of this.
The flood triggered by the cloudburst in Lhonak Lake has so far destroyed 13 bridges in the state. As many as 21 people have died and about 100 are missing.
The army and the NDRF teams are carrying out rescue efforts. Over 22,000 people are said to be affected while over 3,000 tourists have been left stranded due to the disaster.
