In more than a century's time, the month of February has been the warmest, Indian Meterological Department said on Tuesday.

With average maximum temperature1.73 degree celsius above normal across the country during day, this was the hottest February since 1901 when IMD started keeping records.

Warning a severe summer, the weather department in a press briefing also predicted above normal tempertaures over northeast, east and central India during March-May.

The possibility of a heatwave is highly likely during the next three months, IMD said.

While for rainfall, the weather forecaster said downpour in most parts of the country is most likely to be normal. However, in northwest India, west central India and some parts of east and northeast India, it's expected to be below normal.
