Uttarakhand CM announces renaming of multiple places to honor cultural heritage

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the renaming of multiple locations across Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar districts on March 31, 2025.

The decision, according to the Chief Minister, was made to respect public sentiments and preserve India’s cultural and historical heritage.

CM Dhami stated, "The names are being changed so that people can take inspiration from the great men who contributed to Indian culture."

The state government has officially renamed various places as follows:

Haridwar District

Several locations in Haridwar district have been renamed to reflect historical and cultural significance:

Aurangzebpur (Bhagwanpur block) → Shivaji Nagar

Ghaziwali (Bahadrabad block) → Arya Nagar

Chandpur (Bahadrabad block) → Jyotiba Phule Nagar

Mohammedpur Jaat (Narsan block) → Mohanpur Jaat

Khanpur Kursali (Narsan block) → Ambedkar Nagar

Idirispur (Khanpur block) → Nandpur

Khanpur (Khanpur block) → Shree Krishnapur

Akbarpur Fazalpur (Roorkee) → Vijay Nagar

Dehradun District

The state capital Dehradun also witnessed several name changes:

Miyanwala → Ramjiwala

Peerwala → Kesri Nagar

Chandpur Khurd → Prithviraj Nagar

Abdulpur → Daksh Nagar

Nainital District

Two important roads in Nainital have been renamed:

Nawabi Road → Atal Marg

Panchakki to IIT Road → Guru Gowalkar Marg

Udham Singh Nagar District

Sultanpur Patti Nagar Panchayat → Kaushalyapuri

The Chief Minister emphasized that these changes would help reinforce cultural identity and allow people to draw inspiration from historical figures who have made significant contributions to Indian heritage.
