A team of multi-agency officials led by a CBI DIG has gone to Dominica to bring back fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi to India if the courts there allow his deportation. The team consisting of two members of the CBI and officials of the other agencies will be present in the high court of Dominica during the hearing in Choksi's case on Wednesday.

Indian team will press for early deportation of Choksi on the ground that he continues to be Indian citizen, reports said. Despite acquiring Antiguan citizenship after fleeing India in 2017, Mehul Choksi has not renounced his Indian citizenship.

Antigua govt has also asked the Dominca authorities to directly deport Choksi to India. However, Choksi's lawyers have argued that he cannot be sent to India as he is no longer a citizen.

Choksi, who mysteriously went missing on May 23 from Antigua and Barbuda was detained in neighbouring Dominica for illegal entry after a possible romantic escapade with his rumoured girlfriend.
