Assam's cultural and traditional identity 'Gamocha or Gamchha' has finally got Geographical Indication i.e GI tag.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal shared this information on Twitter. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed his happiness on this historic step to bring the identity of Northeast on the global map. The application to get this tag for Gamchha was submitted 5 years ago.
The 'Gamocha' or 'Gamchha' is a handwoven cloth scarf with a red border and varying designs and motifs. It is generally presented to elders and guests by the people of Assam, as a sign of respect. They are an integral part of all social and religious events of Assam and showcase the culture of the state.
GI tag is mainly given to agricultural, natural or manufactured products, handicrafts and industrial goods occurring in a certain geographical area.
