While many of us use jaggery as a substitute for sugar, have you ever used it to smoothen your hair? The unrefined sweetener, derived mostly from sugarcane, has long been cherished for its numerous health benefits, and now its use as a hair care agent is going viral.
Using jaggery for hair is a great idea as explained by nutritionist and dietician Adeeba Ikram Saiyad. She advised netizens to soak jaggery overnight and use the water on their hair in the morning.
Adeeba Ikram Saiyad, dietician at CARE Hospitals Hitech City, Hyderabad revealed that jaggery has non-centrifugal cane sugar which is rich in nutrients and minerals. She said, "Jaggery, a traditional non-centrifugal cane sugar, is rich in nutrients and minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium. These nutrients can contribute to overall health, which in turn supports hair health. Improved blood circulation, better oxygen delivery to hair follicles, and balanced nutrition can all contribute to stronger and more resilient hair.”
According to the dietician, jaggery water is composed of many nutrients like:
Iron
Iron is essential for proper blood circulation and helps grow hair follicles.
Magnesium
Jaggery is rich in magnesium which plays an important role in protein synthesis and energy production, which are crucial for hair health.
Antioxidants
Jaggery contains antioxidants that can help combat oxidative stress, which can damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss.
The dietician further added that compared to other topical treatments like coconut oil or aloe vera, which directly nourish hair and scalp, jaggery works from the inside out, improving overall health.
However, she warned that some individuals might have an allergic reaction to jaggery. She also mentioned that though jaggery water is great for hair, it should be used in moderation.
