Some of us may think that the nightly ritual of consuming milk before bedtime is healthy. However, experts caution that this practice could lead to indigestion, particularly in individuals aged 30 and above.

California based gastroenterologist Dr. Palaniappan Manickam explained why drinking milk before bedtime is not as healthy as we think for people above 30.

Dr. Manickam says that once people turn 30, they may not have enough of an enzyme called lactase. This enzyme helps break down the lactose in milk. Without enough lactase, some people might find it hard to digest milk, leading to stomach issues like indigestion. In simpler terms, when we're kids, our bodies have a lot of lactase to digest milk easily, but as we grow older, especially after 30, we may not have as much, making it harder to digest milk.

Although some experts believe that the potential concerns with drinking milk before bedtime are multifaceted and can vary among individuals.

Here are few other reasons why it might not be as healthy as commonly thought:

Digestive Discomfort: Some individuals may experience digestive issues, such as bloating or discomfort, due to lactose intolerance or difficulty digesting dairy products, especially when consumed close to bedtime.

Caloric Intake: Milk contains calories, and consuming it right before bed could contribute to an excess of calories if not accounted for in the overall daily diet. This may be a consideration for those watching their caloric intake.

Dental Health: Drinking milk before bedtime without proper oral hygiene can contribute to tooth decay. Lactose, a sugar present in milk, can promote bacterial growth if teeth are not cleaned before sleep.

Disruption of Sleep for Some: While some people find warm milk soothing and a natural sleep aid, others may experience discomfort or disrupted sleep due to digestive issues, particularly if they are lactose intolerant.

Individual Variability: People's bodies react differently to food and drink, and what works well for one person may not be suitable for another. It's important to consider individual tolerance and preferences.
