Okinawa, part of the Japanese archipelago, has cultivated an enduring reputation for its remarkable longevity, spanning nearly a millennium. As one of the renowned blue zones globally, Okinawans lead exceptionally extended and vibrant lives. As per the coinage of the term "blue zone" by researcher Dan Buettner, this exceptional longevity is attributed to the Japanese principle of Hara Hachi Bu.

What is the Japanese principle of Hara Hachi Bu?

Before starting to eat the Okinawans recite a mantra hara hachi bu a reminder that they will not eat anymore when their stomach is full 80 per cent. This practice of theirs helps them in keeping healthy and managing their weight.  

Disadvantages of overeating:

Weight Gain: Excessive calorie consumption can lead to weight gain, obesity, and related health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. 

Digestive Issues: Overeating can strain your digestive system, causing discomfort, bloating, and indigestion. 

Nutrient Imbalance: Consuming large quantities of food can disrupt the balance of essential nutrients in your body, potentially leading to nutritional deficiencies. 

Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases: Overeating is linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases, including hypertension, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome. 

Decreased Energy Levels: Large meals can cause energy crashes and fatigue, affecting your productivity and daily activities. 

Emotional and Psychological Impact: Overeating may be associated with emotional and psychological issues, such as guilt, shame, and stress. 

Insulin Resistance: Overconsumption of carbohydrates and sugars can lead to insulin resistance, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. 

Poor Eating Habits: Frequent overeating can promote unhealthy eating habits, making it difficult to maintain a balanced diet.
