Internet is shocked by the recent news of a 9-year-old Japanese girl undergoing plastic surgery to make her eyes look more beautiful. According to reports, the girl's mother, Rucchi had insisted her to do so.
She said her daughter had been suffering from insecurity for not having double eyelids and she did not want her to grow with a complex about it.
Rucchi shared a video of her daughter's surgery on social media, where the girl is seen sobbing and panicking. The video went viral in no time and has received severe backlash from social media users.
Notably, in Japan, it is legal for children to go under the knife as long as they have parental consent. In 2021, a Japanese clinic found that 9 out of 10 respondents wanted plastic surgery for their teens.
According to recent reports and trends, there is a surge in plastic surgery among children because of social media and how these apps make people aware of how they look.
Talking about double eyelid surgery, some Japanese surgeons say that this is because of the influence of Western and white beauty ideals. However, Laura Miller, a professor of Japanese studies and anthropology at the University of Missouri in St. Louis said that it is wrong to assume that Japanese people choose double eyelid surgery because of the influence of Western culture.
In her research, Miller found that Japanese women believe that double eyelid surgery will help them achieve a more kawaii look which is quite similar to that of Japanese models.
