Pride Month 2023: What is misgendering and how does it affect people?

Pride Month is observed in June to honor the LGBTQ community. In celebration of this month, pride parades take place across the world to spread awareness.

However, there are many terms that people are unaware of like misgendering. Let us tell you what it is. 

What is misgendering?

Misgendering is when you refer or relate to a person (nonbinary or transgender) incorrectly by using the wrong pronouns. For example- referring to a woman as 'he' or calling her a man is an act of misgendering. 

How misgendering affects a transgender person

According to healthline.com, misgendering someone has negative consequences on a transgender person's self-confidence and overall mental health. A 2014 study in the journal Self and Identity, stated that 32.8 per cent of them reported feeling stigmatized when misgendered.
