In a major organisational reshuffle, the Trinamool Congress on Saturday appointed MP Abhishek Banerjee as the party's national general secretary.

The two-time MP Lok Sabha MP from Diamond Harbour was elevated to the post after a meeting of the TMC's working committee following the party's landslide victory in the recently-concluded West Bengal Assembly election.

West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee said that the Trinamool Congress has decided to expand its organisational footprint beyond West Bengal.

As a result, Abhishek Banerjee will step down as in-charge of the TMC youth wing. This position will now be filled by actor-turned-politician Saayoni Ghosh.
