The govt has notified the mandatory vehicle recall policy for defective vehicles , Here is what you need to know about it.

What will trigger a recall?

A vehicle recall can be triggered if many consumers of a vehicle report similar type of problem. Wherever a minimum number of complaints, ranging from 100 to around 1,250 for different categories of vehicle against total sales of model is received on the vehicle recall portal, mandatory recall is to be initiated.

How is it different than existing policy?

Right now the recall of the defective vehicle is voluntary in India. Last year 3.7 lakh cars were recalled, which is the highest in 3 years.

How will it be implemented?

The rule comes into effect from April 1. Auto manufacturers  may have to pay a penalty of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore if they fail to call back the defective vehicles even after a mandatory recall
